Salem School District and the Special Education Department provides services for students who are identified with a disability. Students who are suspected of having a disability are referred for an evaluation to determine if they have a special need in one of the following areas:
Autism
Learning Disability
Speech/Language Disability
Cognitive Disability
Orthopedically Impaired
Visually Impaired
Emotional Disability
Other Health Impaired
Traumatic Brain Injury
Hearing Impaired
Significant Developmental Delay
If a student is determined to have a disability and needs special education services to access their education through the evaluation process, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is developed to identify goals, objectives, support and related services they require to benefit from the educational process. Following the development of the IEP, an appropriate educational placement will be determined and offered to parents/guardians. The parents are an integral part of the IEP process and IEP team.

The school district's Early Childhood program serves 3-5-year-old children who have met the criteria for special education services. Each child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) outlines their specific learning goals, supports/services, and location those services are provided. Special education and related services are provided through the District's Early Learning Program.
The role of the Early Childhood special education teacher, is to provide services to students and provide support to families. Areas of student development that are specifically addressed include social-emotional development, behavior, self-help, and problem-solving/pre-academics. The Early Childhood teacher works in coordination with all members of the student’s IEP team.
Students enrolled in the Salem School District may be eligible to receive homebound instruction if they are unable to attend school for over thirty (30) continuous calendar days due to a physical or emotional condition. A licensed physician must provide a specific diagnosis and description of the student’s condition, a statement on the anticipated time the student is not able to attend school, and the expected date of return to school.
APPLICATION PROCESS & NEXT STEPS
Please note that if you choose to engage in homebound instruction, your opportunities for exploratory classes may be limited as homebound instruction focuses on the core academics (math, literacy, science, social studies).
Following the submission of the application, which you can start by clicking the button below, you will receive an email with a PDF document to be completed by a physician and then returned to the district.
Once the application is reviewed and the need for Homebound Instruction is approved, a district case manager will contact the parents regarding next steps and convene a Homebound Instructional team to develop an instructional plan. Your Homebound Instruction case manager will go over all details with you during initial contact.
